11 November 2022: Meet the new Aragon protocol
New Aragon contracts live on testnet, Aragon DAO weekly information sessions continue every Friday, WorkDAO feature week on Twitter

The new Aragon protocol is live on testnet! We’re excited to introduce the base layer of our DAO permission management system that will enable the flexible, modular organizations of the future. Check it out!
We’re continuing Aragon DAO information sessions every week during Friday Socials. After this week’s session (Rules) We have one more session next week (Practices). For questions and updates, refer to the Aragon DAO section of the forum.
This week we featured WorkDAO, our DAO Expert that provides global legal employment solutions for DAOs. We shared a thread on their services and are hosting a twitter space today.
First, a quick note on this week’s events:
The sudden implosion of FTX is frustrating and heartbreaking for many reasons. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by recent events. Some of the biggest gateways into crypto have breached the trust of people in a way that is damaging to the crypto industry and mission. In order for the promise of decentralized technologies to impact society at scale, it’s critical to defend and educate the public on the values and promises that underpin web3.
At Aragon, we continue to build products with the holistic features that make web3 the trustless, permissionless, censorship-resistant, and incorruptible ecosystem it’s meant to be. We earn the trust of people by building trustless technology and delivering governance solutions to counteract corrupt forces.
DAOs and, more broadly, on-chain organizations, are the backbone that will uphold the true ethos of web3. We need to continue innovating, iterating and proving that DAOs can govern sustainable organizations and create meaningful impact. We’ve been through many ups and down, within our own project and within the industry. These challenges only strengthen our commitment to our mission.
We'll stay focused, continue working on antifragile decentralization solutions, and when we try something new, do it purposefully and safely.
Let’s keep fighting for freedom together,
—the team at Aragon
Highlight of the week: Meet the new Aragon protocol on testnet
Say hello to the new Aragon protocol, now live on Goerli testnet!
Our new protocol enables the digital organizations of the future through:
Gas savings: because you should only pay for what you use.
Upgradability: because organizations are constantly evolving.
Role management: to build permissionless, trustless environments.
Unopinionated architecture: because we’re not here to tell you what you can and can’t build.
Flexible systems: so you can design organizations in the future that we can’t yet imagine today.
Security baked-in: because you need a DAO framework you can trust.
You can find our protocol’s contracts here! Any feedback, observation, or idea is well appreciated and encouraged.
Let’s dive into the details 👇
Strategically, the new Aragon protocol is particularly lean—with plugins at the center of any functionality beyond permission management.
You can envision our protocol containing three main sections:
The DAO and its factory: the contracts that create DAOs, store them in the DAORegistry, and where DAOs manage their assets. You can envision the DAO.sol contract as a vault that enables addresses (with certain permissions) to withdraw and deposit assets.
The permission management system: these are the contracts that determine which addresses (which can be contracts or accounts) are able to execute which actions.
The plugins and their manager: this is where we publish plugins, store them, and manage their versions. It contains the logic and the installing instructions for each of the plugins published to the protocol.
The plugin magic, then, combined with a robust permission management system, enable a protocol that is lean at its core, while vast in possibilities.
Building the base of the hyperstructure for governance
Launching the new protocol on testnet is the first major milestone in our strategy to build the hyperstructure for governance, so DAOs can grow and evolve even with the unique circumstances of being deployed on an immutable blockchain.
We’ll explain each piece of this hyperstructure:
Aragon protocol with all its published plugins forms the base.
The Aragon protocol’s Software Development Kit (SDK), a JavaScript gateway into our protocol, is what gives developers an easy way to connect with the contracts and build dApps on top of the protocol.
The upcoming Aragon App will sit on top of it all for end users, making it easy for DAO builders to interact with the underlying smart contracts.
And of course, anyone can build any dApp using the protocol, represented by Interface X in the visual, to target other use case verticals or even an interface for their own custom DAOs.
